Reported hijack attempt on a commercial vessel could indicate resurgent Somali piracy in 2016

Two IHS sources independently reported that on 27 January the Panama-flagged MSC Clara (IMO

9708693) was targeted by Somali pirates after transiting the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait.

IHS Maritime satellite data show the vessel entering the strait around 06:47 UTC on 27 January, after which point IHS sources report it was attacked by pirates sailing from Al-Mukalla, Yemen. Privately Contracted Armed Security Personnel (PCASP) on board reportedly repelled the attack, killing one pirate.

The MSC Clara sailed out of the Gulf of Aden Maritime Security Patrol Area (MSPA) at 17:36 UTC on 27 January, coming to within 28 kilometres of the Bari region coastline on 28 January, at which stage it sped up, reportedly after confusing Puntland Maritime Police Force (PMPF) patrol boats for a second pirate attack.
