UKMTO Weekly Report 23 – 29 Apr 16

1. Open source reports of Yemeni troops recapturing the port city of Mukalla this week from Al Qaeda militants.

On 24 Apr 16 UKMTO were advised that a tanker had been attacked near the port and issued a warning followed by a Maritime Coalition Coordination Cell (MCCC) notice advising vessels using the port or operating nearby to take additional security measures and proceed with caution.

2. Is the stage being re-set for the return of Somali Piracy?

A video available on YouTube (Oceans Beyond Piracy) looks back at incidents during 2015 and asks the question ahead of OBP’s forthcoming launch of the ‘State of Maritime Piracy 2015’ on 3 May 16. Elsewhere the IMB reports a worsening situation off West Africa despite a global downturn in piracy.
