Command Overview

1. On 22 July 2016 at 0456 UTC an MV operating in the vicinity of Jazirat al Hanish al Kabir Island, Yemen, Southern Red Sea reported an exchange of fire between the on-board Armed Security Team and armed assailants approaching in two small boats. The incident lasted for 3 minutes after which the boats headed back towards the Hanish islands, vessel and crew are

safe.

2. In open source news the Diplomat reports a recent visit by the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to four African nations where ‘greater cooperation in maritime security in the Indian Ocean’ was a key focus of the visit (d). The BBC reports on the security crisis being faced in the Niger Delta region with attacks on oil pipelines, installations and kidnap of workers by militants (f).
