2. UKMTO Dubai achieved a milestone this week with the number of ships visited so far during 2016 passing the 1,000 mark. This daily act of reassurance enables UKMTO personnel to update mariners on the latest maritime security situation in the High Risk and Voluntary Reporting Areas. The visits are highly regarded by mariners and UKMTO would like to extend their thanks to the international shipping industry for their continuing support and cooperation.

3. Monday 19 September 2016 was ‘international talk like a pirate day’, a paradoxical holiday where people are encouraged to use ‘pirate’ like language in everyday speech. As an article by CNBC suggests, ‘it’s also a good time to remember that in the real world, actual pirates cause billions of dollars in losses and dozens of deaths each year’ (b). This is further echoed in an article by ‘Foreign Policy.com’ (e) with a stark reminder to those conducting alleged acts of piracy of the potential consequences in the ‘Times of India’ (f).
