Command Overview

1. There has been much open source reporting on the attack involving MV Galicia Spirit on 25 Oct 16. The motive and those who may have been involved are still under investigation. Masters are advised to remain at heightened vigilance when transiting the SRS/BeM iaw UKMTO Advisory 007/Oct/16 and updates.

2. EUNAVFOR has released a statement reclassifying an incident involving CPO Korea on 22 Oct 16 (UKMTO Advisory 006/Oct/16, page 3, disposition above) as an attack, most likely at the hands of Somali Pirates. Speaking about the incident, Maj Gen Magowan stated that ‘This attack shows that pirates still have the intent to attack ships for ransom and cause misery to seafarers’ (d). This is the first attack for over 2½ years in the region, it is strongly recommended that BMP is applied throughout the High Risk Area (BMP4 para 2.6)

3. The next Maritime Information Exchange Vessel Operators’ Meeting (MIEVOM) will take place at the Dubai International Seafarers’ Centre (DISC) on Thursday 8 Dec 16. Those wishing to attend should inform Lt Chris Long at: dubai-2ic@ukmto.org no later than 1 Dec 16.
