UKMTO Weekly Piracy Report #piracy #marsec #HRA

There are no significant events to report this week.

Today I present my first Weekly Report as Acting Officer-in-Charge of UKMTO Dubai, in doing so I would like to add my thanks to Cdr Peter Harriman and acknowledge the significant contribution he has made to both UKMTO and regional maritime security during his three years in charge of this unit. I will hold the position until the arrival of Lt Cdr Iain Beaton RNR in Apr 17.

This week the European Union marks eight years of commitment to deterring pirate attacks off the coast of Somalia and reaffirms the warning that there is no room for complacency (a), meanwhile NATO’s decision to withdraw its warship’s from the region is causing concern in some quarters (b).

Two media articles feature a harrowing report by one of the recently released crew of the vessel Narham3 (c) and a soon to be aired documentary account of the abduction of British couple Paul and Rachel Chandler in 2009 (d), both draw attention to the human cost of piracy.
