1. There are no significant events to report this week.
2. Please note that the date for the next Maritime Information Exchange Vessel Operators’ Meeting (MIEVOM) has been changed to Thursday 18 May 2017. The meeting will take place at the Dubai International Seafarers centre (DISC). A calling notice will be issued in due course.
3. In Somalia hopes are high that parliament will soon elect a new President and Prime Minister forming the Nation’s first representative leadership since 1969 (a). Piracy crime deterrence measures will be investigated at a seminar being chaired by The World Bank’s Development Research Group (DECRG) on 26 Jan 17 in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia (b).
4. As fighting intensifies around the Yemeni Red Sea port of Mokha (c), the Merchant Shipping Industry is reminded of the advice given to ships transiting the area contained in NGA Special Warning 134 from 13 Oct 16 and in UKMTO Advisory 003/Oct 16, in which it states that ‘Masters can expect to see an increased coalition warship presence in the Bab-el-Mandeb straits’ and ‘should operate under a heightened state of alert’.
