1. There are no significant events to report this week.
2. Despite an overall drop in the total number of global pirate incidents reported in 2016, some parts of the world have witnessed a rise in violent attacks. With the suppression of piracy around the coast of Somalia, focus has shifted to West Africa and the waters of the Far East where Pirate Action Groups may be more ideologically motivated than those acting in the pursuit of individual gain (a). The impact felt by the victims of Somali piracy is reflected upon in a recent article which reports on the difficulties faced by some hostages as they return to their homes after, for many, years of captivity (b).
3. Led by the Pakistani Navy, the Combined Maritime Force’s counter piracy unit CTF 151 are currently conducting a Focused Operation (FO) in the Gulf of Aden. FO ‘HILAL’ will centre its efforts in the Internationally Recognised Transit Corridor (IRTC) by projecting, presence, deterrence and reassurance through interaction with local fisherman and merchant ships transiting the area.
