1. UKMTO released one Advisory this week (see page 3). This incident is assessed as non-piracy related (by UKMTO) but most likely connected to other criminal maritime activity in the region, it does however, highlight the potential threat posed to commercial shipping who choose not to transit the IRTC using the Group Transit scheme in the Gulf of Aden.

2. Merchant ships are reminded of the need for increased vigilance as they transit the Southern Red Sea as fighting intensifies around Yemeni ports in that area (a) and (b).

3. The International Defence Exhibition (IDEX) incorporating the Naval Defence and Maritime Security exhibition takes place in Abu Dhabi 19 - 23 Feb 17 (c). Republic of Korea warship ‘Chi Young’ joins EU NAVFOR Somalia - Operation Atalanta (d).
