Two events reported to MDAT-GoG this week, which were classified as false alarms.
10/03/2017
False alarm 110NM/SOUTH from TEMA/GHANA
On 10th March 2017 at around 18:10ZHrs, in position 04°00N / 000°22E, a merchant vessel spotted two long fast boats at a distance of 6NM. Merchant vessel started engine and sailed by full speed. Fast boat then stopped proceeding.
MDAT-GoG Comments: After investigations, MDAT-GoG had not enough information to classify this activity as an illegal act.
11/03/2017
False alarm 7NM/SOUTH from LOME/TOGO On 11th March 2017 at around 02:00ZHrs in position 05°59N / 001°13E, a merchant vessel anchored off Lome, Togo, spotted six suspicious small boats approaching her. Even the fact that small boats were not fitted with nets, it appeared that small boats were fishing vessels.
MDAT-GoG Comments: After investigations, MDAT-GoG had not enough information to classify this activity as an illegal act.
