Bulk of the overall increase is due to increase in attempted incidents. Number of actual incidents had decreased by 12% compared to Jan – Mar 2016

Increase in number of attempted incidents is an indication of successful efforts by crew to deter boarding by perpetrators

Of concern was the abduction of crew in Sulu-Celebes Sea involving the discharge of firearms at ships and crew which resulted in injuries and even death of crew
