1. UKMTO have released one Warning and one warning update this week.
2. MT Costina reported to UKMTO that it was coming under attack on 22 Apr 17, Ref WARNING NOTICE 004/APR/2017. EUNAVFOR responded to the incident and the vessel and crew are safe. No pirates were apprehended.
3. The 40th Shared Awareness and Deconfliction Conference (SHADE) was held in Bahrain on 26 Apr 2017. The meeting was chaired Col Cantrill RM, Chief of Staff, European Union Naval Force Somalia. The recent events in the region were discussed and there was no clear consensus as to whether they were planned or opportunistic attacks, most likely a combination of the two.
These piracy attempts clearly demonstrated that the Maritime Industry should not become complacent and SHADE continued to emphasise the need to follow the guidance, including the voluntary reporting procedures, given in Best Management Practices for Protection against Somalia Based Piracy 4 (BMP4).
4. UKMTO Dubai will be hosting the Maritime Information Exchange Vessel Operators’ Meeting (MIEVOM) on 18 May 2017 which will include a detailed brief of the discussion held at SHADE. Confirmed attendance for the meeting is at a very high level. In order that we can manage numbers it is requested that anyone wishing to attend contact UKMTO to confirm their details.
