2. A press article released this week Identifies fourteen choke points in the world’s food supply transportation chain, three of which are located in the Middle East region. The study by Chatham House in London points to the increasing danger of ‘systemic disruption’ to these trade routes from a variety of threats (a).

3. The name of the new Commander of the US Navy’s 5th Fleet was announced this week (b).

4. Despite an overall drop in global piracy (c), the risk of a potential resurgence in Somalia based activity is very real, some pirate gangs may of diversified their activities but they still retain the ability to conduct acts of piracy should the opportunity present itself (d).

Ship operators are reminded that the most effective way to reduce the risk is to register their ships transits with UKMTO and MSCHOA and comply fully with information given in the Best Management Practices for protection against Somalia based piracy (BMP4).
