1. UKMTO have issued no Warnings and Advisory Notice 001/MAY/2018 this week. 2. On 10 May 2018 at 2015UTC a bulk carrier in psn 1440N 04145E (Southern Red Sea) was involved in an incident that resulted in a breach of the ship’s hull above the waterline, the cause of the damage is unclear at this time but the crew and vessel are safe. 3. Rear Admiral Scott Stearney took over this week as the Commander of the US 5th Fleet and the Combined Maritime Forces. (see article a) 4. The continued movement of large numbers of migrants from Africa to the Yemen in unsuitable boats has the potential to involve merchant ships in a SOLAS incident and may also explain some reported sightings of people transiting the Gulf of Aden in a variety of small craft. (b) 5. Small boat activity of a more sinister kind is covered in an article about the illegal charcoal trade in Somalia, this trade is recognised as a key contributor to insecurity in Somalia, providing a major source of funding for militias, terrorist groups, and other actors linked to conflict, who illegally tax these exports.
