UKMTO have issued no Warnings or Advisories this week.
1. On 22 May two Saudi coalition warships engaged with 4 skiffs off the Yemen port of Hodeidah resulting in two of the skiffs being destroyed. Media reporting suggests the skiffs may have been targeting a merchant vessel which the warships were escorting. Investigations are ongoing but this incident is most likely linked to the Yemen conflict.
2. Illegal fishing in Somali waters which is widely viewed as one of the underlying causes of the initial rise of piracy in the region, continues unabated (article a). This may go some way to explaining the rise in pirate related incidents recorded in 2017 (b and e).
3. EU NAVFOR held a forum in Mombasa this week aimed at bringing together regional partners to focus on counter-piracy and maritime security initiatives (c).
4. Extreme weather continues to batter countries neighbouring the Gulf of Aden. Cyclone Mekuna hit the Island of Socotra and the Dhofar region of Oman this week causing widespread flooding and structural damage (d).
