HIJACKING
09/04/2019
216/99NM off Bonny, NIGERIA
On the 09th April at approximately 1220UTC in position 03°15.75N – 005°57.6E, a Spanish Navy patrol boat investigated the MV MARIA SOLTIN (IMO: 7203699) which was not transmitting AIS. A fast boat had left the vicinity of MARIA SOLTIN with 09 POB. During the investigation, the Captain reported to the Spanish Navy that they have been hijacked during a 4 day period and were threatened with AK-47 and 1 RPG.
On board, nothing was stolen and nobody was injured. MDAT-GOG comment: This event was reported time late report so neither an Advisory notice nor a Warning was released.
SUSPICIOUS APPROACH
08/04/2019
180/46 off Calabar, NIGERIA On the 08th April at 0851UTC, an MV (NAME WITHHELD) had launched a distress call by VHF in position 04°15N - 008°19E. The MV (NAME WITHHELD) reported a suspicious approach by fishing canoes.
The Nigerian Navy arrived on scene to secure the area. Nothing had been reported to suggest an increase in the threat. The Captain had taken appropriate actions. Vessel and crew were reported safe.
