An explosion has set an Iranian oil tanker on fire near the Saudi port city of Jeddah, Iran’s Students News Agency ISNA reported on Friday, adding that experts believed it was a “terrorist attack”. An explosion in an oil tanker that belongs to National Iranian Oil Company has set the vessel on fire 60 miles from the Saudi port city of Jeddah.

The explosion has caused heavy damages and oil is spilling in the Red Sea, unnamed sources told ISNA. “Experts believe it was a terrorist attack.”

An Iranian oil tanker has been hit by an explosion in a possible "terrorist act" in the Red Sea, according to Tehran's state media.

The blast sparked an oil spill and fire on board a stricken ship belonging to the to the National Iranian Oil Company, it was reported. Photos published by Iranian media show a huge plume of smoke rising from the tanker. Marine tracking websites show the 20-year-old Sinopa tanker holding a position about 60 miles south-west of Jeddah in Saudi Arabia.

The vessel, formerly named Susangird, was reportedly en route to Syria - via the Suez Canal and the Mediterranean - with a cargo of one million barrels of oil.
