Maritime Crime Activity
THEFT
08/10/2019 informed on 14/10/2019
Pointe Noire anchorage
On the 08th October 2019 at 2240 UTC, a research vessel reported a theft while anchored at Pointe Noire. Duty team spotted an intruder on the forecastle and raised the alarm. The thief fled on a small wooden fishing vessel without engine, where an accomplice was waiting. Some ship properties have been reported missing.
BOARDING
13/10/2019
Wouri river / Douala
On the 13th October 2019 at 0010UTC a fishing vessel was attacked by an unknown number of pirates onboard a speed boat at the entrance of Wouri river in position 03°52N 009°28E. The pirates managed to board the vessel but the embarked Armed Security Team confronted them. Gunfire was exchanged with damage caused to the hull of the fishing vessel.
There were no casualties among the crew and onboard security team. However, 2 pirates were hit and felt in their speed boat resulting in the speed boat withdrawing from the scene. A third pirate jumped into the water. The status of the 3 attackers remains unknown.
MDAT-GoG COMMENT: this report is a time late report, therefore neither WARNING or ADVISORY was released by MDAT-GoG.
As a result of the attacks that took place in Douala anchorage on the 15th August 2019, Cameroon provides Navy Armed Security Team to the vessels in Cameroonian waters (on a voluntary basis).
