1. Highlights:
- PIRACY/ROBBERY/MARITIM TERRORISM
One event reported the previous week on a Hong Kong flagged bulk carrier while anchored at Batangas Bay Anchorage Area, Philippines on 20 Aug. This is the second knife attack carried on an anchored vessel in this area in August;
Total events in 2020 : 67 incidents since the beginning of the year in IFC area of responsibility (compared to 56 at the same date in 2019);
Areas of interest:
Singapore Strait: 21 incidents in 2017, 20 in 2018, 45 in 2019, 21 in 2020 (20 events at this date in 2019);
Sulu Sea: The threat level has now been downgraded back to normal. Area remains risky. It is advisable to stay away from this area as much as possible or to write/call me before any transit if you absolutely have to transit there;
Following anchorage areas:
Bangladesh: Chittagong;
India: Kakinada, Alang;
Indonesia: Anyer, Batam, Begawan, Belawan, Dumai, Merak, Panjang, Sandakan, Samarinda, Taboneo and Tanjung Uban;
Philippines: Manila, Bauan/Batangas, General Santos Harbour;
Vietnam: Campha, Ho Chi Minh, Vung Tau.

August 10: 12 Hong Kong migrants were arrested after being intercepted by local authorities off Guangdong, China for illegally crossing the border;
August 25: 8 crew members were not allowed to leave their ship when they found out if was engaging in smuggling activities and had their salaries withheld by the captain.
- CONTRABAND
August 23:
Myanmar Police seized 1,380 kg of crystal meth from a vessel docked southwest of Kyeinnali, Myanmar;
Local authorities arrested smugglers attempting to smuggle meth by trawler off Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh.
- MARITIME INCIDENTS
August 22:
A fishing boat with four crew members has vanished off Ishigaki Island in Okinawa Prefecture and the Japan Coast Guard has dispatched a patrol boat to find it;
Two fishermen reported drowned at sea off Bengkalis Regency, Indonesia. One victim's remains have been found while the other is still missing;
August 23:
Two bulk carriers collided off Kutubdia Island, Bangladesh. Both ships reportedly sustained serious damages;
A fishing vessel and a passenger vessel collided off Sibolga Bay, Indonesia causing one death and 23 were rescued;
August 24: Violent Confrontation between a Malaysian Law Enforcement Vessel and Speed Boat ; a skipper of a speedboat was killed attempting to smuggle out wildlife off Tanjung Kelesa, Johor, Malaysia;
