UKMTO ADVISORY NOTICE 001/AUG/2020


1. Category: BOARDING


2. Description: It has been reported to UKMTO that MV WILA, Liberian flagged, Greek owned products tanker was boarded in position 2538N 05641E on 12 AUG 20 at 1323 UTC by Iranian Naval Forces.


The vessel was then reported to have returned to anchor in the Khor Fakkan anchorage. The vessel and crew are safe.


All vessels in the vicinity are to stay vigilant and to report any incidents to UKMTO.

VESSELS ARE ADVISED TO EXERCISE CAUTION WHEN TRANSITING THE AREA

Threat Type: Threat to Commercial Vessels from Iran and its proxies


Geographic Area: Persian Gulf, Strait of Hormuz, Gulf of Oman, Arabian Sea, Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, and Indian Ocean


The International Maritime Security Construct (IMSC) monitored the boarding of the Liberian flagged M/T WILA by Iranian forces in international waters in the Gulf of Oman near the Strait of Hormuz on August 12, 2020.


Although the vessel and crew have been released, further Iranian actions against petroleum tankers cannot be discounted. U.S. commercial vessels operating in this area should review U.S. Maritime Advisory 2020-011 for amplifying information and points of contact.
