Advisory Release 0002/20 – Illegal Companies Operation in Nigeria Date: 19th August 2020
In view of a recent online media publication suggesting illegal operations of some foreign Private Maritime Security Companies operating in Nigerian Illegally, MASPAN will like to advise members and the international shipping community that the association is closely monitoring events as to its conclusion in order to continue to provide guidance.
MASPAN is actively engaging with local authorities with a view to providing unambiguous guidelines to shipping on the position of the law and the Nigerian state regarding such situations. In the meantime, MASPAN will like to advise members, Ship Owners/Managers, Flags and indeed the shipping community as follows.
1. MASPAN will like to reassure the shipping community that its compliance procedures carefully ensure its members comply with the Nigerian Laws and regulations, enabling companies to operate within the ambits of the law. Please review these procedures on https://www.maspan.org.ng/guideline-for-private-companiesoperating-in-the-nigerian-maritime-security-space/
2. To this, MASPAN assures that all members listed on the association’s website have undergone this scrutiny; thus, operating legally in Nigeria.
3. Owners/Managers are strongly advised to carry out due diligence on companies before they are engaged for the provision of security and security-related services to ensure the company is familiar with the rules and complicity that exist as well as legally registered to render such services. MASPAN provides a forum for members to engage continuously with one another as well as the authorities, for guidance in such situations.
4. Owners/Managers are advised to kindly go through the guidelines on our website and seek additional clarification from the association in carrying out their due diligence and can email us through admin@maspan.org.ng and copy generalsec@maspan.org.com (Emmanuel Maiguwa)
